From energy independence to green energy: the Baltic LNG & Gas Forum returns to Klaipėda

2023-06-01 International LNG operations

The second Baltic LNG and Gas Forum will take place in Klaipėda on 7-8 June. Representatives from the largest energy companies in the region and Europe, experts and decision-makers will gather in the Lithuanian port city to focus on energy security, cooperation, the future of energy and tackling climate change.

Focusing on energy independence and cooperation towards it
The Baltic Sea region and Europe as a whole are going through an unprecedented energy transformation, triggered by the Russian-led war in Ukraine and the aggressor's energy blackmail.

According to the moderator of the forum, David Ledesma, an independent gas and LNG terminal consultant, the focus of this year's Forum will be on energy independence. "The European gas and LNG market is facing major challenges as it moves to increase its energy independence from Russia.  Security of supply has risen on politician’s agendas and gas prices remain ever challenging. The Baltic LNG & Gas Forum together with influential energy sector experts will address these as well as other important issues including the need for additional infrastructure, gas and LNG trading and the importance of regulation," said Mr Ledesma, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies & and an independent gas and LNG consultant.

The Forum will also focus on strengthening cross-border links and cooperation in the energy sector, with representatives from the region's national authorities, energy companies, transmission system operators and experts from various fields.

"It is symbolic that the Baltic LNG and Gas Forum is taking place in Klaipėda, a strategically important hub for liquid energy products and gas services, which has become a role model for other European countries since the outbreak of war. With new LNG terminals coming on stream in Europe, the accelerated development of cross-border pipeline interconnections and the deployment of renewable energy technologies, we need to work more closely with our partners to ensure energy independence and a faster transformation of energy supply and consumption," said Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN, outlining the objectives of the forum.

The agenda includes topics on alternative energy of the future
The two-day forum's agenda focuses not only on topics related to the natural gas business, but also on building an independent and sustainable energy supply chain. The second day of the event will be dedicated to green energy, with representatives from the energy industry discussing how the Baltic region can achieve its net-zero target in 2050.

Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN, underlines the importance of alternative energy topics against the backdrop of climate change mitigation and security of supply challenges. Hydrogen and its carriers to replace conventional forms of energy in the energy, industrial and transport sectors will become crucial in the world of the future, and investment in carbon capture and utilisation projects will also be needed to achieve a sustainable transformation without damaging industry and the economy. At the same time, measures will have to be found to balance the fluctuations in renewable energy production and consumption.

"The road to a climate-neutral future will require investing in the production and use of renewable energy, and finding ways to replace the most polluting forms of energy with natural gas during the transition period. LNG infrastructure will continue to be critical in the energy transition phase and in the future we look forward to the successful use of existing infrastructure for bio or synthetic methane loading," notes Darius Šilenskis.

The Forum will provide an opportunity to learn more about these alternative energy solutions and to discuss the possibilities of creating a climate-neutral energy supply chain in the Baltic States.
