In early June, the LNG carrier, chartered by the Polish energy group ORLEN, arrived for the first time at the Klaipėda Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal, operated by the international energy terminal operator KN Energies. The carrier delivered approximately 160,000 cubic metres of LNG from the USA.
It is the first of eight LNG carriers ordered by the Polish energy group ORLEN. Six vessels from the company’s fleet are already completed, and the remaining two are scheduled to enter service in 2026. The company’s own fleet supports efficient LNG transportation to Poland and strengthen ORLEN’s position in the global LNG market.
ORLEN is one of six long-term capacity users of the Klaipėda LNG terminal that have concluded a long-term capacity contract for the period until 2032. In May, ORLEN delivered its first LNG cargo for Ukraine via the Klaipėda LNG terminal. More than 150,000 cubic metres of LNG arrived from the same Cameron liquefaction terminal in the US. The gas was transported from Klaipėda via the GIPL pipeline through Lithuania and Poland to the Drozdovichi station on the Polish-Ukrainian border, where it was received by Naftogaz.
This cargo is the result of cooperation between ORLEN and Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz. In March 2025, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and diversify its sources of gas supply. Under the agreement, ORLEN will deliver around 100 million cubic metres of natural gas to Naftogaz via the Klaipėda terminal.
"During the first quarter of this year, due to targeted russian attacks on Ukraine’s gas production and supply infrastructure, enormous damage was inflicted. More than 40 percent of Ukraine’s gas production capacity, as well as various equipment essential for ensuring gas supply, was damaged or destroyed. Our commitment to supporting Ukraine is unwavering. I am pleased that the operations of our LNG terminal have expanded beyond the Baltic region and that we are now able to contribute to Ukraine’s gas stockpiling and preparations for the upcoming winter season," notes Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.
Under the long-term contract between the ORLEN Group and KN Energies, the company can import over 0.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually through the Lithuanian terminal. So far, 12 deliveries with a total volume of nearly 800 thousand tons of liquefied natural gas have reached the FSRU in Klaipėda under this agreement. After regasification, part of the gas was sold to recipients in the Baltic countries, while the remainder was supplied to the Polish market via the Poland–Lithuania Gas Pipeline, launched in May 2022.
The ORLEN Group also holds a five-year agreement with KN Energies for the exclusive use of the LNG reloading station in Klaipėda. The agreement is valid until March 2030. The gas received at this LNG reloading station supplies the Polish market and is also distributed to markets in the Baltic countries, among others. To date, the ORLEN Group has received 63 shipments with a total volume of approximately 85 thousand tons of LNG.
“The LNG delivery to the Klaipėda terminal carried out by our gas carrier is another step in strengthening ORLEN’s position as a regional leader in the gas sector. Cooperation with partners from Lithuania and Ukraine demonstrates that our efforts have a real impact on the energy security of the entire Central and Eastern Europe,” says Grzegorz Bujnowski, Executive Director for Gas Trading at ORLEN.
“We sincerely appreciate our partnership with our partners in Poland and their efforts to strengthen energy independence — both their own and that of neighbouring countries. The LNG cargo for Ukraine delivered by ORLEN through our terminal in May, along with the recent arrival of the LNG carrier, are yet more examples that clearly illustrate Klaipėda LNG terminal’s role not only as Lithuania’s primary source of natural gas, but also as a regionally significant infrastructure ensuring gas supply to other countries,” notes Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN Energies.
This is not the first time that energy products have been transported to Ukraine via Lithuania. Between 2022 and 2023, almost 100,000 tonnes of diesel fuel were delivered to Ukraine through the liquid energy products terminal in Klaipėda operated by KN Energies.
