Following the completion of the annual LNG terminal capacities allocation procedure by the operator of the oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals KN (AB “Klaipėdos nafta”), the LNG terminal's regasification capacity of 9 TWh has been allocated to five customers for the gas year 2023.
Summarising the results of the long-term and annual procedures, in the 2023 gas year (from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023) the Klaipėda LNG terminal services will be used by 7 customers: Lithuanian companies, which have been allocated a total of 19 TWh of the terminal's regasification capacity, and customers from Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Norway. Following the completion of the annual LNG terminal capacity allocation procedure, a total of 33 TWh of regasification capacity has been allocated for 2023. It is also foreseen that spot market capacity (up to 6 TWh) will be allocated during the 2023 gas year, prioritised in case there is a need for isolated operation of the energy system.
"The new LNG terminal capacities allocation model systematically assesses the natural gas needs of both the region and Lithuania. We are pleased with the growing cooperation with existing and new customers, each of whom is important for the smooth functioning of the gas market in the region. We believe that a balanced capacity allocation model will ensure not only a stable gas supply to Lithuanian consumers, but also the most competitive natural gas prices in our region," said Mindaugas Navikas, Chief Commercial Officer of KN.
From the beginning of 2022 until 10 October 2022 27 large gas carriers have been received at the LNG terminal (compared to 13 in the same period last year), with 9 more expected by the end of the year. During this period, around 3.6 million cubic metres of LNG have been delivered, with the majority (72%) coming from the USA. In 2023, the Klaipėda LNG terminal is scheduled to receive 39 gas carriers bringing in around 5.3 million cubic metres of LNG.
The total amount of LNG terminal regasification capacity planned for 2023 is 39 TWh. By comparison, 23.6 TWh have been regasified at the LNG terminal by 10 October this year, and additionally up to 9 TWh are planned to be regasified by the end of the year. In 2021, the total amount of gas regasified was 16 TWh.
