Klaipedos Nafta announces allocation of LNG terminal capacities

2016-12-12 Company news

Following the successful start of operations of the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Baltics, its operator SC Klaipedos Nafta starts the terminal’s capacity booking procedure for new gas year – starting from the 1st of October 2015.

LNG terminal capacity allocation procedure allows terminal users to book capacities for the basic and seasonal LNG regasification and seasonal LNG reloading services. Annual gas year runs from 1st October to 1st October the following year.

Capacities can be booked according to the terminal regulations of use which are being constantly evaluated by Klaipedos Nafta in order to respond to actual market needs.

“Successful start of LNG terminal operations indicates to the market that the terminal is being operated safely, reliably and is open for third party access. During the first months of operations Klaipeda LNG terminal is directly used by the State’s appointed LNG supplier JSC LitGas. What’s more, a newly formed gas supply chain has become attractive for Estonian industries – they already import gas from Lithuania. We hope that the second year will attract more terminal users who will discover benefits of an alternative gas supply infrastructure in the region”, – says Mars Bartuška, Klaipedos Nafta CEO.

The total capacity of the terminal to be distributed this year amounts to 1.45 billion Nm3 per year, which amounts to 2.5 million. m3 of LNG per year.

The terminal’s possibilities will increase more after the launch of the new main gas pipeline connection Klaipeda-Kuršėnai that is planned from the beginning of 2016. Greater opportunities will open after the Latvian gas market liberalization as well.

According to M. Bartuška, Klaipeda Nafta aims to make the most effective use of the LNG terminal at regional level, so in the coming years plans to expand LNG business portfolio – to build onshore LNG distribution station from which the LNG will be transported by auto trailers to the region and applied as fuel for ships, public transport, heating and electricity generation in remote areas where undeveloped gas supply infrastructure.

Klaipedos Nafta has already signed the first contract with the future LNG distribution station user – Estonian company JetGas.

The State owns 72,32 proc. of Klaipedos Nafta.
