KN Energies expands the use of renewable energy at its terminals

2025-08-18 Liquid energy terminals

A 500 kW solar power plant will be installed at the Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal operated by KN Energies, the energy terminal operator. This plant will contribute to more sustainable and efficient terminal operations. KN Energies will allocate nearly €350,000 for the project, part of which has been secured under the Lithuania's Recovery and Resilience Plan 'New Generation Lithuania'.

Photovoltaic modules of the solar power plant will be installed on the roofs of various buildings and throughout the terminal’s territory, located near the Klaipėda port gates. The project encompasses all implementation stages – from design and installation of equipment to grid connection and commissioning. A smart monitoring system will also be installed.

The total installed capacity of the power plant is expected to reach 500 kW.

“This project is part of our consistent and sustainability-driven terminal development. We aim for the infrastructure we manage not only to reliably meet client needs but to operate as efficiently as possible. The solar plant will allow part of our operations to be powered by green energy we produce ourselves. This aligns with our long-term strategic goals to transition toward a more sustainable, lower-carbon operational model,” says Dainius Čiuta, Chief Operations Officer at KN Energies.

KN Energies will invest nearly 350 thousand euros in the project, part of which has been received as investment support under the "New Generation Lithuania" plan, funded by the European Union's "NextGenerationEU" instrument.

The installation works will be carried out by contractor UAB Elmitra, selected through a public procurement process.

It is estimated that the plant will generate nearly half a gigawatt-hour of electricity annually, helping avoid more than 74 tons of CO₂ emissions. This amount is equivalent to the emissions from driving approximately 418,000 kilometers in a car or burning 29,000 liters of diesel – all of which will no longer be emitted into the atmosphere once the powerplant is operational.

KN Energies has already been investing in sustainable electricity use solutions for several years. In March 2023, a 300 kW solar power plant was launched at the Subačius liquid energy products terminal, fully covering its electricity needs. In April this year, its capacity was increased by another 100 kW. In total, nearly €250,000 has been invested into the Subačius terminal’s solar power projects.

In May of this year, KN Energies signed a €19.3 million (excl. VAT) contract with AB Kauno tiltai to implement the power line interconnection project with the Klaipėda LNG terminal. Once completed, electricity produced from renewable energy sources will be supplied to the FSRU Independence and the terminal jetty. Preliminary estimates suggest this will reduce the CO₂ emissions of the LNG terminal by around one-third.

KN Energies is an international energy terminal operator that ensures safe and reliable flows of liquid energy products and liquefied natural gas (LNG) for users in the Baltic Sea region. The company helps clients worldwide develop sustainable energy infrastructure projects with its knowledge and skills. KN Energies currently operates three liquid energy product terminals in Lithuania and operates LNG terminals in Lithuania, Germany, and Brazil. Additionally, it provides commercial operation services for four floating LNG terminals in Germany.
