Brunsbüttel LNG terminal

From June 2023, KN provides commercial management services at the Brunsbüttel LNG terminal in Germany. Following the takeover of the terminal by the German state-owned company Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), a new consolidated tender for the commercial management of all four German LNG terminals was launched, and as a result of the tender, KN Energies started the commercial management of the Brunsbüttel terminal as well as of the other three LNG terminals in Germany on DET’s behalf at the beginning of 2024.

The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is the third LNG terminal to become operational in Germany. The LNG terminals in Germany were put into operation to avoid energy shortages following Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Brunsbüttel LNG terminal project

The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is located in the port town of Brunsbüttel, at the mouth of the Elbe River. The terminal project was carried out by Elbehafen LNG GmbH, a subsidiary of the German energy group RWE, on behalf of the German government, and the terminal’s operation was taken over by Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), a subsidiary of the German German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, in 2023.

The Brunsbüttel LNG terminal is based on Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) technology. The project uses the Höegh Gannet, a FSRU built in 2018 with a capacity of 170,000 cubic metres of LNG. The expansion of the pipeline capacity will allow the LNG terminal to deliver up to 7.5 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year.
