Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal

About terminal

The Klaipėda liquid energy terminal is one of the largest liquid energy handling terminals in the Baltic States. In 2024, 3.4 million tonnes of liquid energy products were loaded.

The purpose of the terminal is to provide the services of handling (various schemes) of oil products supplied from/to oil refineries and storage of such products in the storage tank park of the terminal.

Liquid products are also imported through the KN liquid terminal, which involves the services of transferring oil products from oil tankers to the clients’ facilities (tank trucks and/or tank wagons).

Services and products

At the KN Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal

  • handling of crude oil and oil products from/to tank wagons to oil tankers and between tankers;
  • liquid energy products are accumulated and stored;
  • dark and light oil products are blended with bio-additives and marking substances;
  • other port services are provided.

Oil products

  • Gasoline and intermediate products
  • Diesel
  • Bitumen
  • Gasoline blending components (isomerate, hydrogenate, oligomerate, etc.)
  • Fuel oil
  • Vacuum gasoil
  • Various types of oils
  • Jet fuel
  • Kerosene

Biofuel

  • Ethanol
  • Fatty acid methyl esters (FAME)
  • Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)
  • Used cooking oil (UCO)
  • Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
  • Methanol (planned)

Petrochemicals

  • Monoethylene glycol (MEG)

Modern technologies enable the Klaipėda liquid energy terminal to store and load different types of products simultaneously, while ensuring full quality preservation and product segregation.

Oil products in KN Oil Terminal can be loaded through the following schemes:

  • Tanker – storage tank – tanker.
  • Tank wagon – storage tank – tanker.
  • Tanker – storage tank – tank wagon.
  • Tanker – storage tank – tank truck.

The terminal operates its own boiler house with a total capacity of 100 MW across three boilers. This ensures smooth and uninterrupted handling of oil products that require temperature control.

Terminal capacities

  • 51 tanks
  • 570,000 m³ total storage capacity
  • 8 million tonnes annual throughput capacity

Berths

  • 3 berths
  • 14 m depth
  • 275 m length
  • 100.000 tonne vessels

Road tankers

  • 4 tanker loading bays 8 loading units
  • 15 loading points for various products

Railway

Klaipėda liquid energy products terminal operates two double-track tank wagon loading racks:

  • Two tracks for petroleum products that do not require maintaining of specific temperature conditions (up to 2 x 30 tank wagons are services simultaneously);
  • Two tracks for oil products that require maintaining of specific temperature conditions (up to 2 x 32 tank wagons are services simultaneously;
  • One of the tracks is adapted to oil products of all types;
  • 124 tank wagons can be loaded at the same time.

Petroleum products that require specific temperature conditions are removed from tank wagons by heating them in the heat exchangers by means of heated fuel oil or other products (VGO). This advanced transfer decision ensures the quality of the petroleum products being handled and allows to avoid product loss.

In order to optimise the transfer of products from eight-axle (120 t capacity) tank wagons, one track of the tank wagon loading rack is used solely for such tank wagons: two bottom-transfer units are connected to each of the 16 tank wagons. Using this method the transfer of fuel oil from the eight-axle tank wagons is speeded up by 30-40%.

Description of the railway service facility

The purpose of the Railway Service Facility Description is to provide information on non-discriminatory access to the Railway Service Facility (RSF), where core services (freight terminals) are provided, and to ensure that such access is granted to railway undertakings (carriers) and to the companies specified in Article 28(3) of the Railway Transport Code in a timely and appropriate manner.

Storage Tanks

Klaipėda liquid bulk terminal’s storage tank park consists of more than 5ą tanks with a capacity of 1.400 mto 31.500 mfor oil and other liquid products. The total capacity of the storage tanks is 570.000 m3.

Modern technologies and technical solutions enable the storage and handling of oil products of different types at the same time while ensuring separation of the products and maintaining the required quality parameters. Monitoring of the quality parameters is conducted by a modern oil product laboratory situated in the territory of the terminal.

Part of the storage tanks are equipped with pontoons that reduce both evaporation from oil products and environmental pollution.

Tank truck loading

Klaipėda liquid bulk terminal has a tank truck filling area where oil products are transferred from tankers or tank wagons. There is possibility to add multifunctional additives and / or biofuels to oil products in the terminal.

Up to four tank trucks may be loaded in the terminal‘s tank truck filling area simultaneously. The eight filling units installed enable the loading of oil products of eight different types to tank trucks at the same time.
