Second Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal

KN Energies is providing commercial management services for this and three other German LNG terminals on behalf of DET, following the successful bid in early 2024 launched by the German state-owned company Deutsche Energy Terminal GmbH (DET), which operates the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal. KN Energies was also awarded the tender for the technical operation and maintenance services of the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal in mid-2024.

KN Energies is conducting the preparatory work for the technical operation of the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal on behalf of DET by setting up an operational company in Germany, an engineering team, and preparing the terminal’s technical operating documentation. Upon the start of commercial operations at the terminal, KN Energies will be responsible for the technical operations and maintenance of the terminal’s infrastructure – including the jetty, its equipment, and the pipeline – organizing the work of the on-site team, as well as coordinating preventive and corrective actions.

More information on the project is available on the DET website.

Second Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal project

The Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal, based on floating storage ship unit (FSRU) technology, will be located on the German North Sea coast.

The FSRU Excelsior, built in 2005, will moore with a regasification unit at a jetty currently under construction in the port of Wilhelmshaven, which is about 1.5 kilometres offshore and just under two kilometres south of the existing Wilhelmshaven 1 LNG terminal. The terminal will be connected to the grid at the injection point of the Wilhelmshaven 1 terminal. The terminal is expected to have an annual regasification capacity of up to 3.9 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year.

The FSRU Excelsior is 277 m long and 43.4 m wide, with a storage capacity of 138 000 cubic metres and a nominal regasification capacity of 5 billion cubic metres per year.

KN Energies role in the project

KN’s activities during the implementation of the Wilhelmshaven 2 LNG terminal project includes:

  1. Recruitment and training of the local team;
  2. Preparation of technical and organisational procedures;
  3. Procurement and implementation of systems and processes required for safe operation and maintenance;
  4. Customer consultancy during the commissioning and handover of the terminal infrastructure;
  5. Operation and maintenance services for onshore and offshore infrastructure, including jetty, pipeline and other facilities;
  6. 24-hour supervision and monitoring of terminal operations;
  7. Incident response, should this be required.
