The Klaipėda LNG terminal — a cornerstone of energy security

About the Klaipėda liquefied natural gas terminal

Put into operation in December 2014 (commercial activities started in 2015), the Klaipėda LNG terminal is one of most important facilities in Lithuania that ensures the national energy security. It has enabled the formation of a natural gas market in Lithuania and opened opportunities for the country to import natural gas from all over the world. Now customers can receive the gas from various suppliers at market prices.

The Klaipėda liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal operates in the southern part of Klaipėda State Seaport, in the Curonian Lagoon at the Kiaulės Nugara Island.

The Klaipėda LNG terminal consists of a floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) named Independence, jetty, connecting gas pipeline and gas metering station. FSRU is permanently moored to a jetty in the Klaipėda State Seaport and constantly supplying natural gas to gas transmission system.

The FSRU Independence was built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd shipyard in South Korea and has been owned by KN Energies since December 2024. Technical operation services for the FSRU are provided by UAB Hoegh LNG Klaipėda (acting as the managing partner in a joint venture with Höegh LNG Fleet Management AS).

FSRU Independence is an LNG carrier designed as a FSRU. Moored at a berth in the Klaipėda Seaport, that receives/transfers the LNG from/to the carriers coming to the port. The LNG is regasified in the heat exchangers of the FSRU.

The gas carriers are moored to the right side of the FSRU. The terminal berth is 450 m long and consists of three mooring points, six rope attachment points, servicing and high-pressure platforms, and connecting bridges. Special equipment has been installed on the berth, such as fire safety towers and a fire extinguishing system,  maintenance cranes, high-pressure loading arms, quick-detach rope hooks, electric generators etc.

An almost 18 km long pipeline connects the LNG terminal and a natural gas distribution station of Amber Grid AB, Lithuania‘s natural gas system operator. The metering of the LNG regasified at the terminal takes place at the terminal‘s gas metering station.

Benefits

  1. The first terminal that ensures the energy security of the Baltic Sea Region
  2. Third-parties have access to the capacities of the terminal
  3. Attractive regasification tariff rates promote the development of the natural gas market in the country, whereas the LNG handling rates create competitive conditions for small-scale LNG operations
  4. The Klaipėda Seaport is a non-freezing port, which guarantees smooth navigation and continuous handling all year round
  5. LNG used for process needs is allocated to terminal uses based on actual consumption;
  6. Storing the minimum gas quantity on FSRU means that the terminal is always ready for operation
  7. The infrastructure is suitable for both regasification and LNG transfer
  8. The terminal enables the reservation of the spare LNG regasification and transfer capacities depending on the demand and technical capacity of the terminal.

LNG utilisation options

LNG is a clear, colourless, non-toxic and non-explosive liquid produced by cooling natural gas to –162 °C. During the cooling process, the gas volume decreases 600 times, enabling easier and safer storage and transportation.

Once LNG is delivered to its destination, it is converted back into gas at regasification facilities and supplied via pipelines to households, businesses and industry, where it is used for heat or electricity generation. Today, LNG is becoming a more economical and cleaner fuel, while the infrastructure of the Klaipėda LNG Distribution Station enables the use of clean fuel in shipping and heavy road transport.

Weathervane of Freedom – Embodying Lithuania’s Aspiration for Freedom

At the end of 2024, as the FSRU Independence of the Klaipėda LNG terminal came under Lithuanian ownership, it became an even stronger guarantor of our country’s freedom, while simultaneously symbolizing the path of freedom that Lithuania has taken. To mark the terminal’s decade of operation in Lithuania and the beginning of a new stage in its journey, the hull of Independence has been adorned with a unique weathervane, specially designed for this occasion and inspired by the folk-art traditions of the coastal areas of the Curonian Lagoon.

A symbol born of a unique tradition

The choice of the weathervane as the symbol of Independence is no coincidence. It is a unique heritage object for the Lithuanian seaside – similar folk art are not found anywhere else in the world.

The history of weathervanes characteristic of the Curonian Spit region dates back to the 19th century. On the roofs of houses or on the mast of ships, the owner used to encode his surroundings, his dreams, hobbies, values, a specific story, a narrative in the weathervane.

The freedom weathervane on the Independence retains the form of the traditional Curonian Spit weathervane, but its modern symbols tell the story of Lithuania’s freedom and signify the nation’s uncompromising pursuit of freedom, both political and energy.

Tells the story

The weathervane placed on the hull of Independence tells the story of Lithuania’s freedom throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, of which the Klaipėda LNG terminal itself is an integral part.

Encoded symbols

Our country’s most important steps towards freedom are encoded in this unique symbolic weathervane. The weathervane remains a symbol and reminder of Independence for everyone who looks at it.

Authentic heritage

With this emphasis, the FSRU presents Lithuania not only as a leader in the energy independence of the region, but also as a country with an authentic heritage that is consistently nurtured.
